 2018-2020 DAKOTA SANDSTONE WELL PROJECT UPDATE


On July 31, 2018 the S.W. Regional Water District was awarded a $500,000.00 grant from the USDA Rural Development federal funding program to be used with a $2.1 Million low interest loan for the construction of 2 new 600 GPM Dakota sandstone wells in central Montgomery county. The project also will include the construction of 5 Miles of 12” PVC pipe to be located in north central Page county.


SWRWD begin test well drilling work and some preliminary engineering design work in 2016. This test drilling work provided hydrogeological information to use in the planning and location of future production wells. SWRWD invested $580,443.46 in engineering, test drilling, land purchase, and federal pre-application environmental studies to prepare the project for loan and grant application by the end of May 2018



S.W. Regional Water District secured an IDNR water withdrawal permit on June 28, 2018. This State Permit allows SWRWD to pump 1200 GPM from the Dakota Sandstone Aquifer. Once the two Dakota wells are in full operation, SWRWD will increase its groundwater supply
by 1.2 MGD.


   SWRWD is also planning pipeline extensions to 60 new 
customers. This will involve the construction of 28 miles
of new pipeline. Century Bank will finance this project
which has an engineering cost estimate of $896,000.00
and will be bid and constructed in late 2019.

                                                                         DAKOTA SANDSTONE WELL DRILLING PROJECTS 2016-2018


The past two years SW Regional Water has consulted and worked with engineers, well drillers, IDNR, and hydrologists to identify and plan drilling sites to construct new test wells in the Dakota sandstone aquifer in central Montgomery county.In 2016 - 4 new core sample drilling sites were secured with easements and two of those sites had test wells constructed  
on them after core sampling and sieve analysis was completed.

 The North Test Well located next to a SWRWD pumping station was drilled to a total depth of 215 feet. The layer of sandstone was 60 Feet deep, and the test well casing was 6” in diameter. Pumping tests were completed in March and May of 2017 at 363 GPM for 73 hours and 369 GPM for 31 hours. 

 A hydrologist report was issued in August 2017 and provided recommendations to construct a finish Water Production Well on 1 of the 2 Test Well sites. Iowa DNR completed a future well site evaluation at this north Test Well site. In November 2017 the SWRWD purchased 4 Acres at this North Test Well site for
a future 750 GPM production well water supply. Water quality test samples were collected during the pump testing startup and again at the end of the pump tests. These water samples were sent to certified state labs for analysis. Test results provided information to use for upcoming water treatment engineering design.

 Plans for a new 750 GPM production well to be constructed
and in full operation by 2020 will be located on the south side
of the SWRWD pumping station at the intersection of K Avenue
and 200th Street.

On November 9, 2017 SW Regional Water entered into
a new well drilling contract with Layne Water Resource
to drill and construct a 2” Observation Well and a 6” Test 
Well in the S.W. ¼ of Section 23 – Red Oak Township. 

On December 5, 2017 Iowa DNR-WS Engineering issued a
Test Well construction and aquifer withdrawal permit. The
DNR withdrawal permit allows a 500 GPM pumping rate for
a maximum of 2.5 million gallons for testing purposes only.

 The 2017 Layne drilling contract was in the amount of
$61,031.00. On January 20, 2018 a 2” Observation well
was test drilled to a depth of 225 Feet. The drilling material
was collected for lab analysis. Clean sandstone was found
from 140 feet to 223 feet. Construction of the 2” Well was
completed on January 24, 2018. A sieve analysis report and
Test Well design was submitted by Layne on March 2, 2018.
The Test Well design would allow for a minimum pumping 
of 200 GPM.
